Overall health and wellbeing – YogaBugs issue of the day!

Here at The Bugs Group we have helped thousands of children to come out of their shell when taking part in sport, which has seen some fantastic results across all the schools we have worked with. Some of the parents from our classes have even come forward and said how beneficial the FootieBugs, DanceBugs, YogaBugs and MultiBugs classes have been for their child’s early development.

The area we are discussing today is overall health and wellbeing.

Overall health and wellbeing in our minds is how a child feels after they take one of our classes. Of course, our aim is to ensure that each child enjoys the session and is fully engaged. But more importantly, our outcome is for children to improve their overall wellbeing as a result of taking our classes, because that is what matters the most.

YogaBugs is a great way for children to get involved in sport in a pressure free environment. At YogaBugs there is a strong emphasis on enjoying physical activity rather than just performance. This is what allows each child to relax, have fun and show their personality.

Overall health and wellbeing in particular is very important to our YogaBugs teachers and this is clear through our top statistics, let’s have a look…

At Christ Church C. of E, we introduced our YogaBugs Impact & Change programme for a total of 6 weeks. The children were assessed on ten key areas before and after the programme was implemented. Before the programme, the children received an average rating of 3.9 out of 10 for overall health and wellbeing and after the ten weeks they had seen an improvement to 4.9 out of 10. That’s an improvement of 25%! We were very proud of this result and saw a massive improvement in the children’s development outside of class and they were able to interact with a number of difficult poses at the end of the programme such as Crab, Turtle etc.

At Wattville Primary School, we also introduced our Impact & Change programme for a total of 15 weeks. Our YogaBugs class ran half an hour sessions on a weekly basis for a period of 15 weeks. The children were given an average rating of 3.6 out of 10 before the programme started and after it ended, they were given a rating of 4.7 out of 10. This was another incredible improvement of 31%!

Overall, we are very proud of our work across the UK and of course each child that has taken part in our Impact & Change programme.

Dragons’ Den Peter Jones tells YogaBugs… “You’ll live to regret this.”

“You’ll live to regret this” That’s what Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Peter Jones told YogaBugs founders, Fenella Lindsell and Lara Goodbody after they turned down funding offers for their child-focussed business YogaBugs.

We asked The Bugs Group CEO Mark Goode, what happened and how did it influence the business over the years

When Nell and Lara appeared on Dragons’ Den in August 2006 they were asking for a £200,000 investment to develop what was our franchise operation at the time and a way of improving the cash flow for the company. “Dragons” Theo Paphitis and Peter Jones both offered them the money, but for double the percentage of the business that they wanted to offer. They said no. “Dragon” Richard Farleigh then offered them £200,000 on his own but for 30 percent of the business. Again, somehow the two of them held out. In fact, once the cameras were off, Peter Jones even offered to buy the whole company for £1.5m. however, after great thought the two of them again said no.

£1.5m is a great deal of money for a company that had not even got off the ground yet and I guess a lot of people would have took the money and ran, I think at the time the belief in the business was such that no price was going to get them to walk away from their dream.

The day after it aired we actually fielded another 17 serious offers, more than 1,000 emails but we did make some fantastic contacts.

Did they do the right thing?

Well, YogaBugs has grown into a multi-million pound operation with not only classes across the UK but offices now in Australia, China and Singapore as well as receiving enquiries from around the world on a regular basis.

YogaBugs also now forms part of The Bugs Group, joining together with FootieBugs, DanceBugs, RugbyBugs, TennisBugs and MultiBugs. All with the aim of encouraging children to enjoy the world of sport.

But what makes YogaBugs so successful…

In a nutshell, YogaBugs is a way of bringing the benefits of yoga inspired movement to children aged between 2½ -7 years, with “Yoga’d Up” catering for children aged 8-12 years. Traditional yoga postures, breathing and relaxation techniques are taught through story adventures that are aimed at capturing the children’s imagination.

Many yoga postures have child-friendly names, such as, Dog, Surfer and Crab and the classes incorporate a series of warm-up exercises, a story for the younger children and fun-themed classes for the Yoga’d Up age group. They include between 15 to 30 yoga postures, games, songs and relaxation time.

What better non-competitive, all-inclusive sport can you get?

To date YogaBugs now have over 40,000 children taking classes each week (many via private funding, or free funding via Schools Sports partnership & lottery funding grants).

It has also trained over 1,200 teachers and is constantly expanding.

“Turning down the Dragons was quite something,” I guess “We will never know what would have happen if we had taken the money” but I think most people would say it has all worked out very well in the end.

Francesca Kleanthous- Kastelanides

YogaBugs SE & SW London – Wandsworth & Lambeth Regional Manager since 2009

“Growth is the key to this business. I love the Yoga and the uniqueness of YogaBugs means I really stand out from the competition of other more traditional children’s activities. I take this message and I share it with as many people as I can reach, and I understand the need to fully put into practise and use the support tools HQ provide me with. For me this is a full time business and one I take very seriously. We have an important message to deliver, but the beauty is the more children I inspire to be active the more I earn”.

YB Karen B

“I began as a YogaBugs teacher. I loved it so much eventually I knew I had to make it my business. The unique approach, the story telling, the creative use of rhymes and music and of course the exciting adventures mean I am delivering a product be like no other. On top of that in helping on the YogaBugs mission to inspire children to be active every week, I am given great materials from HQ to support the parents outside of the classes. The earning are great and I love being in control of my own diary. Yes I work hard but I work hard for me and for the children I work with”.

YB Simon

“This is a truly wonderful business with a powerful reason for doing it. Every child I reach through the classes that my business offers means we get one step closer to inspiring children every week. We would like to say a BIG congratulation to Karen Williams our YogaBugs Teesside Regional Manager, who is celebrating her first year With YogaBugs in style by securing 45 hours per week in schools and nurseries in the Teesside area for the new school term in September.

Since Karen joined YogaBugs in August 2014, she has been off to a flying start with so many Head Teachers and PE Co-Ordinators loving the YogaBugs’ ethos and recommending her to others in the area – she is proud to be stretching the imagination of so many children in schools and nurseries in her territory.

Please see below a fantastic testimonial from one of the schools Karen is currently working in….

“The days Karen comes in to work with our nursery children are always so exciting for us all – children and staff love her!  She has a really good manner with the children and always tries to link with our curriculum which has been lovely to see.  As this year is progressing we can see how well the children are responding to the exercises she does with them, now she can say the name of one of the familiar postures and the children respond by getting themselves into the correct position.  We are all big advocators of YogaBugs in Nursery and Karen is doing a marvellous job with the children”.

Kate JukesNursery Teacher at Green Lane Primary Academy, Acklam.

When we caught up with Karen and asked her what made her choose YogaBugs this time last year this is what she said…

“Following eleven years as a primary school teacher and after having my two children, I began looking for a better work/life balance that would allow me to combine my love of working with children and my desire to run my own business. When I came across YogaBugs I knew it was the right thing for me! Children can be introduced to the benefits of yoga whilst most importantly using their imagination and having fun I love seeing the impact that YogaBugs can have on children who take part in our classes”.

Karen has truly taken her first year with YogaBugs by storm, and we cannot wait to see the growing impact that she will have on schools and nurseries in her area in the 2015/16 new school term!

Well Done Karen,

Keep up the great work!

Top Ten Tips To Get Your Child Fit & Healthy over the summer holidays

  1. Get your child to YogaBugs. YogaBugs is great exercise for all children and fully inclusive for children of all abilities with different classes for various age groups. YogaBugs not only works the body but also develops concentration, self-esteem, literacy and numeracy. YogaBugs uses yoga as a medium to tell stories and inspire children. Please click here to find your local class
  1. Eat slowly and in moderation. In a day and age when nearly a quarter of children are obese or overweight, this is really important. Control portion sizes and you will be able to continue to offer a wide variety of food. Also make sure they eat slowly. This will allow their brain the time to realise they are actually full.
  2. Get a minimum of eight hours sleep. Sleep shall help your child keep to the right weight. Sleep will rest their metabolism and prepare it for burning fat the following day.
  3. Give them a choice. Turn the television off but then give your child a choice of activities. This leaves them feeling empowered and more inclined to join in the physical activity because they have actively chosen it.
  4. Get dancing. Use your love of music to get your child active. Have lounge discos and they will be getting exercise whilst having loads of fun and bonding with you.
  5. Involve their friends. Children are far more likely to be active if they are playing with their friends. Just make sure the games consoles are out of reach.
  6. Ditch the car. Walking to and from shops and parks in the morning is not only great for the environment, it makes sure your child has done some physical activity before they have even truly begun their day. It won’t hurt you either.
  7. Turn TV commercials into fitness breaks. Nobody really likes it when adverts ruin their favourite show. Invent funny names for simple exercises like squat thrusts, press-ups, and sit-ups, and then do them together till the show comes back on. This will really add up over the course of the day.
  8. Get charitable. Exercise for exercise sake can be difficult to motivate yourself for never mind your little ones. Yet, it becomes far easier with a focus. Sign up for a charity fun walk. Children have great empathy and they will love being able to help those less fortunate and will be proud to tell their teacher and class mates when they go back to school.
  9. Get them in the garden. Love it or hate it there is no doubt that gardening is good physical exercise for everyone. Get your children involved and not only will they be doing something healthy they will also be learning new skills.

We hope that you have found this information useful and it has excited and motivated you to take the next steps for yourself and your child to keep fit and healthy over the summer holidays.
